Toba Hawthorn Tree Crataegus x mordenensis ‘Toba’
The Toba Hawthorn, Crataegus x mordenensis ‘Toba’, is hardier than some of the other Hawthorns. This tree was introduced by the Morden Station of Manitoba, Canada. It bears fragrant, large, double white flowers that turn to pink. The foliage is glossy, and it bears 1/2 inch red fruit. The glossy dark green foliage turns to yellowish-brown in fall. A unique feature of this tree is that the trunk is somewhat twisted. Toba has a broad, upright habit that is rounded, silver gray bark on twisted branches, site adaptable. The bark is amber colored with medium texture, branches are armed with slender 1-3 inch thorns. Can be used as an ornamental plant or in groupings.

Toba Hawthorne
Need some info please. We have a Toba Hawthorne. This is the third summer for it. it is about 15 ft tall and only about 7ft wide. The trunk is not twisted and not unique. Does this take time for the tree to take on these characteristics. Has white flowers in late spring quickly changing to pink. Not very many berries in the fall. Can the berries be eaten?? There are no branches from the ground up to about 4ft. Some small shoots are beginning to grow. Should these be clipped off and the trunk left bare? Also my tree has no thorns on it. It is a beautiful tree and any info on it would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks you Frank

Mine took about 10 yr to be twisty and gnarly. It’s 30 yr old now and just lovely. I’ve had to prune severely three times to keep in within bounds – it just keeps spreading out, although it hasn’t grown in height (15 feet) for the last 20 yr.
indiscriminate browning of leaves..
We have what looks like dead branches and some have live (green leaves) mixed with clumps of brown leaves. The tree was flowed out very nicely but now looks like crap.. what might it be ? Please…
